How to use — Should Cost
Should Cost builds a target price for a product from the ground up. Describe the part; the tool calculates what it should cost using built-in regional machine, labour and overhead rates for 12 countries and 20 manufacturing processes.
Required inputs
Material — Material type and weight (g or kg). The tool adds the scrap allowance from the selected process.
Manufacturing process — Sets the machine hourly rate and the tooling cost range.
Cycle time (seconds) — The most cost-sensitive input. If unknown, leave the default — it is loaded from the process automatically.
Assembly time (minutes) — Labour minutes for handling, inspection and packing of one part.
Manufactured vs Purchased
Manufactured — The part is produced. Fill material, weight, process, cycle time, tooling and assembly minutes.
Purchased — The part is bought ready. Enter only the unit purchase price; the other fields are disabled.
Tooling or consumable?
Apply one test: “Would this object still exist if my specific part were never ordered?”
No → Dedicated tooling. Enter the total tool cost; the tool amortises it across the annual volume.
Yes → Consumable (cutting tip, lubricant, standard die). Do not enter it here — it is already included in the machine hourly rate.
Finding cycle time — four sources
Supplier RFQ — ask “Seconds per part?” as a standard question.
Built-in default — loaded automatically when the process is selected.
Similar part benchmark — use a part of comparable weight and process you have bought before.
Factory observation — one minute with a stopwatch on site is enough.
